You've hung out in the bars, scrolled through Growlr, and for sure collected a few bearded stories of your own. The bear world covers a wide mix of identities, body types and personalities, and most guys fit more than one label at once.
Here's our take on bear lingo: casual, a bit cheeky, no fluff.
Bear
The classic, and also the umbrella term for the whole scene. Hairy chest, solid build, confident grin. Covers a wide range of body types and ages, the common thread is owning your look instead of hiding it.
Cub
A bear in training. Younger, smaller, or just less experienced, but still furry, friendly, and a bit more playful.
Daddy Bear
Older, often more experienced, and not easily rattled. Comes across as calm, sometimes protective, part of why "daddy and cub" is such a common pairing in the scene.
Otter
Slim or athletic but hairy. Social, charming, somewhere between bear and twink.
Wolf
Athletic, confident, a bit dominant, often with grey or salt-and-pepper hair. Leaner and more angular than a bear, more "rugged outdoors" than "cuddly".
Chaser
Not a bear himself, but someone specifically into bears or bigger, hairy guys. Often slimmer or more twink-bodied.
Admirer
A softer version of a chaser, into personality and connection just as much as looks.
Muscle Bear
Gym-built and hairy, think powerlifter more than bodybuilder. Muscle plus fur.
Chub / Bear Chub
A heavier-set, larger-bodied guy. The focus is on size rather than body hair, though the two often overlap. Comes with its own "chub and chaser" scene.
Polar Bear
A bear with white, silver, or grey hair, the hair colour is the defining feature, not necessarily age, though it's often older guys.
Panda Bear
A bear of East or Southeast Asian descent. A term that comes from within the community and is used with pride.
Leather Bear
Bear culture meets leather and kink: harnesses, gear, and a more dominant or submissive dynamic depending on who's wearing what.
Manatee
Big and smooth, little to no body hair, but built and carries himself like a bear, just without the fur.
Femme Bear
A bear who plays with femininity: glitter, makeup, or flamboyant styling alongside the beard and body hair.
Lesbear / Ursula
Lesbian women who are part of bear culture, often larger-bodied or more masculine-presenting, and visible at bear bars and events rather than separate lesbian-only spaces.
Pocket Bear
A shorter, compact bear, same build and body hair as a bear, just on a smaller frame.
Trans Bear
Trans men who are part of the bear scene, recognized and welcomed as bears, not as a separate category.
Grrr & Woof
"Woof" is the bear scene's wolf-whistle, said out loud or dropped as a comment when someone catches your eye. "Grrr" is the cheekier cousin, more of a growl with a wink. Either way: it means "I like what I see."
